Lowell, MA – George W. Cormier, 75, died suddenly, Friday, November 1st, 2013 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Mary M. (O’Donovan) with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.
George was born in Lowell, MA on July 29, 1938, the son of the late Emilie Allard, from Piopolis, Quebec, Canada and Edward L. Cormier from Salem, MA. He graduated from Ste. Jeanne d’Arc Grammar School in 1951 and St. Joseph Boy’s High School in 1955, both in Lowell. George earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Lowell Technological College. George proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1961-1963.
In his younger years, George was a 1961 Golden Gloves 147lb. Boxing Champion. Furthermore, he was All Army 147lb. Champion in 1962, and All Service 147 lb. Champion in 1963.
For more than 40 years, George was the hard-working, dedicated owner and operator of Billerica Furniture Co. in Billerica, MA. He was well-known for his humor, free advice, and always putting a smile on everyone’s face. He had many return customers from all over New England and beyond over the years.
George was extremely devoted to his wife Mary and three daughters. He traveled yearly with his wife and children during their childhood with his favorite destination being Ireland, the homeland of his wife. He also loved vacationing in Naples, FL.
George was a selfless man and was always thinking of others before himself. He was there to help everyone whenever they needed anything. George was a fun and charismatic guy with a never ending flow of jokes and funny stories. He enjoyed reading, solving Sudoku puzzles, shoveling snow, playing Nintendo and had an extensive music collection that he listened to daily. On the more personal side, George was a religiously faithful man, attending Mass daily at St. Margaret’s Church in Lowell.
Along with his wife Mary, George is survived by and will be deeply missed by his three daughters, Mary Gail Waterfield and her husband Jason of Chantilly, VA, Colleen M. Cormier of Londonderry, NH, and Kerry Ann Cormier of Lowell; his siblings, Rev. Leo G. Cormier of Dracut, Edward L. Cormier and his wife Lorraine of No. Chelmsford, Lucille Cayer and her husband Richard of Kissimmee, FL, Ruth Shaw and Alice Page both of Dracut; his three beloved grandchildren, Taylor Berry of East Machias, ME, and Aidan and Kayla Waterfield of Chantilly, VA; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
George was predeceased by four brothers, Charles E. Cormier, Sr., Robert F. Cormier, Alfred N. Cormier, and Francis L. Cormier, and by three sisters, Irene Ste. Marie, T. Jean Ste. Marie, and Anna Walters. He was also predeceased by many dear friends, especially Thomas Tannian and Richard Blaney.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects from 3:00PM-7:00PM on FRIDAY, November 8th at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Ave., DRACUT. His funeral will take place from the funeral home at 8:15 a.m. SATURDAY with his Funeral Mass to follow at 9:30AM at St. Margaret’s Church in Lowell. Cremation will follow. Burial will take place on TUESDAY, November 12th at noon at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Chelmsford.
